Nestled on the Norfolk coast, Cromer’s windswept cliffs, ever-changing skies, and the enduring rhythm of its crab fishermen form an essential part of Hopkins’ creative vision. Many of Hopkins’ most admired works draw inspiration from the tale of the Sheringham Mermaid, a myth rich with intrigue and duality. The mermaid often appears in his paintings as an enigmatic figure, embodying both allure and mystery. While many versions of the myth portray her as a perilous being, luring fishermen to a watery demise, others depict her as a saviour, rescuing those in peril at sea. In the Sheringham version of the legend, she is captivated by the harmonious voices of a congregation at All Saints’ Church. So moved by the music, she emerges from the sea and crawls to the church doors, reversing her traditional role as a siren and transforming her narrative into one of wonder and redemption.
Norfolk is steeped in tales of fearsome hounds, and among them, the legend of Old Shuck looms large. In Cromer, some stories suggest that Shuck was the lone survivor of a shipwreck, now destined to prowl the cliffs of North Norfolk for eternity. Her spectral presence is said to hunt smugglers and other wayward souls, a shadowy enforcer of justice. Beyond her physical form, Shuck might symbolise our own conscience. She warns against straying from the moral path, her ghostly figure a chilling guide to redemption or ruin.
Central to Hopkins’ work is a profound belief in embracing the complexity, impermanence, and ever-changing nature of life. Water emerges as a powerful symbol in his art, embodying forces of transformation and renewal.
